I've been writing...

Salutations!

It's been a while, I know. If you are reading this, thank-you for your loyalty haha, I am well aware that I've not been the most reliable blogger!

I just wanted to let you know that I've been writing, writing poetry more specifically, and I have made a video of a poem I wrote because I feel like videos are a better medium for poetry in the current world of the internet. That is, I wouldn't go to a blog for poetry to read, but I might watch a poem in a video, so I figured that other people probably would too.

This blog has always been a way for me to be creative in whatever way I chose, and really this is just a continuation of that, which is why I'm putting it here. I hope you enjoy. :)

ps. I'm really quite obsessed with Hamilton at the moment, which is part of the reason that I've been writing a lot. It's very inspirational!

Thoughts on beginnings

Salutations!
I'm a sucker for new beginnings. I love the possibilities that come with them, how anything could happen, so long as I put my mind to it. There are no mistakes yet, just new things to discover.

One of my favourite beginnings is pilot episodes. I love clicking on a new TV show, and getting introduced to a whole host of new characters, with endless possibilities of friendships and arguments and romances and heartbreak. There are no boring repeated plot devices at this point, everything is different and captivating. A whirlwind through characters' lives, spinning the promise of a story.
beach fire I love the first sentence of a new book, especially the ones that I read and instantly know I won't be putting this book down until I know how it ends.

"Mr and Mrs Dursley of number four, Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank-you very much."

"When I think of my wife, I always think of her head."

"Dear Friend,
I am writing to you because she said you listen and understand and didn't try to sleep with that person at that party even though you could have."

(Points to you if you know which books these are from haha!)
photo driftwood by sea_zpsbuvvizum.jpg This week is the first week of lectures for 2016 (or at least it would have been if I had posted this last week like I meant to, it is now the second week haha). A new beginning, albeit a familiar one.

There is the buying of new stationery (a personal favourite), sitting through the boring first lecture which inevitably only covers the course outline and epic hugs with old friends.
There is the excitement to be learning again, the vague sense of dread when the lecturers detail how many assignments there are and the desperate refreshing of "myAllocator" (aka myAlligator) when tutorial sign-ups open.
There are the tired legs that are struggling to get used to Wellington hills again, the engulfing yawns on Monday morning of those who partied hard for O-Week and the slightly sweaty handshakes of new acquaintances.

Through all of this, there is a heady mixture of excitement and worry about what is to come. Mostly excitement though. :)
photo beach fire at night_zpsiozmew1q.jpg I think I just love the potential that exists in blankness, whether it be a blank year, or a blank wall. I actually have this funny habit of keeping a blank wall in my bedroom just so I can imagine what could go on it. For me, having a blank wall is not boring, but a place of imagination and endless possibility.

Anyway, I hope that the new year is going well for you, and that the possibilities for it excite you as much as they do for me.

ps. I stopped my photography project, not because I gave up, but rather I realised that I was taking photographs without the prompts, and it was taking up time that I would much rather spend doing other creative projects. :)

Week 2 - Black and White

Salutations!

I took these photos lazing around the garden yesterday. It was so nice to just wander around the garden and find hidden beauties that I wouldn't otherwise notice. If I'm honest, a number of these photos involved me lying down on the grass and seeing the fun angles I could shoot things from.

So anyway, without any further ado, here are my experimentations with black and white. :)

Week 1 - Self Portrait

Salutations!

It's 2016, a new year! New beginnings, new years resolutions.... clichés.

Clichés that I buy into though. I do love a good New Year's resolution. So, this year, one of my resolutions is to post every week on this blog. I am going to do it with the help of this website, which has a weekly photography challenge. I will then share my photo(s) on here, along with whatever weekly ramblings I have. I may well make other posts too, but these are the main, scheduled thing. I will probably (hopefully) upload them every Sunday.

2015 was a year of self-discovery for me, but not really in a very shareable way. It was unsettling, in a good way though. 2016 will probably be just as busy, but hopefully in a more settled way.

I used this week's challenge in a slightly different way than was suggested. A self-portrait is usually about capturing your essence in an artistic manner. I decided to use it to give myself confidence about being in photographs. Because, while I love taking photographs, I usually really don't like it when I'm in them.

So this challenge to me was more of an internal one, to prove to myself that I could look not just pretty, but beautiful in a photo. To look at a photo of me and be able to think to myself that I honestly look good.

And while quite a few of them were very silly, it was fun, and you know what? In at least one of them, I think I do look beautiful.

Mount Victoria - Wellington

Salutations!

All year my friends and I have been saying that we must walk up Mount Victoria together, and a couple of weeks ago we finally got around to it.

It is such a lovely walk that isn't actually too strenuous, with an incredble 360˚ view from the top. I discovered when we reached the top that you can just drive up there, but, let's be real, it is so much more rewarding to walk up.
